Ingredients:
For the hamburger steak:
- 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)
For the brown gravy with mushrooms and onions:
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
For the hamburger steak:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, and black pepper.
- Mix all the ingredients together until well combined, but be careful not to overwork the meat.
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval or round patties, about 1/2 to 3/4-inch thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the hamburger steaks to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked to your desired level of doneness. Transfer the cooked hamburger steaks to a plate and set them aside.
For the brown gravy with mushrooms and onions:
- In the same skillet used to cook the hamburger steaks, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook over medium heat until they become tender and lightly browned.
- Push the onions and mushrooms to the side of the skillet and add the butter to the empty space. Once the butter is melted, stir in the flour to make a roux.
- Cook the roux for about 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly until it’s lightly browned.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to the gravy. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for a few more minutes until it thickens and reaches your desired consistency.
Assembling the Hamburger Steak Smothered in Brown Gravy with Mushrooms and Onions:
- Place the cooked hamburger steaks back into the skillet with the brown gravy.
- Spoon some of the gravy, mushrooms, and onions over the top of each hamburger steak.
- Let the steaks simmer in the gravy for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Serve the hamburger steaks smothered in brown gravy with mushrooms and onions with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
Enjoy this delicious and comforting dish that combines juicy hamburger steaks with rich brown gravy and flavorful mushrooms and onions!
